Dye school is a type of vocational education that trains students in the art and science of dyeing fabrics. The term “dye school” can refer to either a stand-alone institution or a program offered at a larger college or university. Dyeing is a complex process that requires knowledge of color theory, chemistry, and fabric properties.
Dye schools typically offer both classroom instruction and hands-on experience in dyeing labs. Students learn how to mix dyes, apply them to fabric, and create desired effects. They also study color theory and the science behind the dyeing process.
In addition to learning about dyestuffs and techniques, students also gain experience working with different types of fabrics. Most dye schools offer certificate or diploma programs, though some may offer associate’s or bachelor’s degrees in textile arts or a related field. Admission requirements vary by school, but most programs require applicants to have completed high school or equivalent coursework.
Some schools also require students to submit portfolios for review prior to admission. Once they complete their training, graduates are prepared for careers as dyers, colorists, textile designers, or other professionals in the textile industry. With additional experience and training, some may also pursue management positions within dye houses or other businesses that use dyestuffs.
