Two garments can carry the same fibre content on the label, the same size, and wildly different prices — and the expensive one can still be the worse buy. What separates them isn’t usually the headline spec. It’s construction, fabric quality beneath the fibre percentage, and fit.
This guide covers how to read a garment, what fabric and construction details actually predict durability, how sizing works (and why it’s so inconsistent), and what to look for across the main clothing categories.

Reading a Garment
The Fibre Content Label
The label tells you what the garment is made of, but not how well. “100% cotton” covers both a coarse promotional tee and a premium combed ring-spun shirt.
Still, fibre content sets the fundamentals:
- Cotton — breathable, absorbent, comfortable, soft. Slow to dry, wrinkles, shrinks.
- Polyester — durable, quick-drying, holds shape and colour. Less breathable, retains odour.
- Cotton-poly blends — the common compromise. 60/40 and 50/50 balance comfort against durability and shrinkage.
- Tri-blends (cotton/poly/rayon) — very soft with good drape, popular for fashion tees. Less durable.
- Linen — exceptionally cool and strong, gets better with age. Creases readily, and that’s inherent.
- Wool — insulates even when damp, resists odour, naturally elastic. Merino is fine enough for next-to-skin wear.
- Elastane/spandex — usually 2–5%, providing stretch and recovery. Degrades with heat, so avoid hot washing and tumble drying.
- Rayon/viscose/modal/Tencel — soft with excellent drape. Notably weaker when wet.
Construction Details That Predict Durability
These tell you more than the price tag:
Stitch density. More stitches per inch means a stronger, more flexible seam. Sparse stitching is the first sign of cost-cutting.
Seam type. Flat-felled seams (as on quality jeans and shirts) enclose the raw edges and are the strongest common construction. Overlocked seams are standard for knits. A single row of straight stitching with unfinished edges will fray.
Reinforcement at stress points. Bar tacks at pocket corners, belt loops, and fly openings. Their absence is where cheap garments fail first.
Shoulder seams. On T-shirts, shoulder-to-shoulder taping stops the neckline stretching out over time — a genuine durability marker.
Side seams vs tubular. Tubular tees are knitted as a tube with no side seams — cheaper, but they twist after washing. Side-seamed garments hold their shape.
Collar construction. Ribbed collars with elastane recover; plain jersey collars stretch out and stay that way.
Buttons and buttonholes. Cross-stitched shank buttons outlast simple four-hole attachment. Buttonholes should be densely stitched with clean edges.
Pattern matching. On striped or checked fabric, matched seams indicate care and more generous fabric use.
Lining. On jackets and structured garments, a full lining improves drape, comfort, and longevity.
Sizing and Fit
Clothing sizes are not standardised — not between countries, not between brands, not always within a single brand. A medium from one label may be two inches different from another. Vanity sizing, where brands label garments smaller than their measurements, adds further noise.
The only reliable approach is measurements, not labels. Measure a garment you already own that fits well, and compare against the size chart.
Key measurements:
- Chest — measured flat across, doubled, for garment width
- Length — high point of shoulder to hem
- Shoulder width — seam to seam
- Sleeve length — shoulder seam to cuff
- Waist and hip — for bottoms
- Inseam — crotch to hem, the measurement that determines trouser length
Fit Types
Slim/fitted follows the body closely — needs stretch in the fabric or it restricts movement. Regular/classic allows moderate ease; the traditional default. Relaxed/loose has generous ease throughout. Oversized is deliberately much larger, a style choice rather than a fit error.
Fit is also affected by shrinkage. A 100% cotton garment that fits perfectly in the shop may not after washing — pre-shrunk fabric limits this, but rarely eliminates it.
T-Shirts
The T-shirt is the most-produced garment on earth and the one where small quality differences are most visible.
What matters:
GSM — around 180–220 for everyday wear, 150–180 for lightweight fashion tees, 220+ for premium heavyweight.
Yarn quality — combed ring-spun cotton is noticeably softer and more durable than carded open-end cotton at identical weight. This is the single biggest quality differentiator on a T-shirt label.
Neckline construction — ribbed collar, preferably with elastane, and shoulder-to-shoulder taping.
Side seams — present rather than tubular.
Fabric finish — pre-shrunk (often labelled “compacted”) makes a substantial difference to how the garment holds its size.

Jeans and Denim
Denim is a cotton twill, traditionally with indigo warp and undyed weft — which is why jeans are blue outside and paler inside, and why they fade the way they do.
Weight, given in ounces per square yard: 8–11oz is light, 12–14oz is standard, 15oz+ is heavyweight. Heavier denim is more durable and takes longer to break in.
Raw vs washed. Raw (unwashed) denim is stiff and develops fade patterns specific to the wearer. Washed denim has been pre-treated for softness and a finished appearance — most jeans sold are washed.
Selvedge denim is woven on narrow shuttle looms, producing a self-finished edge. It indicates traditional production methods and usually better fabric, though the edge itself is largely aesthetic.
Stretch content. Modern jeans commonly include 1–3% elastane. It improves comfort considerably, but stretch denim generally has a shorter life than rigid denim, since the elastane degrades.
Construction markers: flat-felled seams, bar tacks at stress points, a sturdy zipper, and chain-stitched hems (which produce the characteristic roping effect as they fade).

Jackets and Outerwear
Outerwear is judged by what it’s actually for.
For rain, the specification that matters is the waterproof rating (in mm) alongside breathability. Fully taped seams matter as much as the fabric — untaped seams leak regardless of the fabric rating. A durable water repellent finish sheds surface water but wears off and needs periodic reproofing.
For warmth, the question is insulation type. Down offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio and compresses well, but fails when wet and costs more; fill power (600, 800, 900) indicates loft quality. Synthetic insulation is heavier and bulkier for the same warmth but keeps insulating when damp and costs less.
Construction markers across outerwear: two-way zippers on long coats, storm flaps over zips, adjustable cuffs and hem, a lining that moves freely rather than pulling, and pockets positioned to be usable while wearing a pack or seatbelt.

Trousers and Bottoms
Beyond jeans, the main categories are chinos (cotton twill, smart-casual), dress trousers (wool or wool-blend, tailored), joggers and sweatpants (knit, usually French terry or fleece), and leggings (high-stretch knit with elastane).
Fit points to check: rise (low, mid, or high — this affects comfort more than most people realise), thigh and leg opening, and whether the waistband sits flat rather than folding over.
Construction markers: a proper waistband with interfacing, bar tacks at belt loops and pocket corners, pocket bags in a fabric sturdy enough to survive, and a hem with enough allowance to be let down.

Undergarments
Underwear and bras are judged almost entirely on fit and fabric, since construction is relatively consistent within a price bracket.
Bra fit is the recurring problem — band and cup are interdependent, and most support comes from the band, not the straps. If the band rides up at the back, it’s too loose. Cup and band sizes trade off against each other (sister sizing), which is why 34C and 36B hold similar cup volume but fit differently.
Fabric should manage moisture and stay comfortable against skin all day. Cotton is breathable and comfortable; microfibre is smoother under fitted clothing; modal is exceptionally soft. Elastane content drives recovery, and it’s the component that degrades first — which is why underwear has a genuine service life regardless of how it looks.
Wired vs wire-free is a fit and preference question rather than a quality one. Wire-free construction has improved substantially and now offers real support in many designs.

Garment Care
Care determines lifespan more than initial quality does.
Wash cooler. 30°C handles most everyday soiling. Hot water accelerates fading, shrinkage, and elastane breakdown.
Wash less. Jeans, wool, and outerwear rarely need washing after every wear. Airing is often enough.
Turn printed and dark garments inside out. This protects prints from abrasion and reduces surface fading.
Skip the tumble dryer where possible. Heat is the primary enemy of elastane and the main cause of ongoing shrinkage. Line drying extends garment life significantly.
Don’t overload. Garments need room to move for the wash to work and to avoid excessive creasing.
Fasten zips, unfasten buttons. Open zips abrade neighbouring fabric; fastened buttons strain buttonholes.
Store knitwear folded, not hung. Hanging stretches knitted shoulders permanently.
Common Problems
Garment shrank after the first wash. Fabric wasn’t pre-shrunk, or was washed hotter than it should have been. Cotton knit can lose 5–10%.
Neckline stretched out. No shoulder taping, or the garment was repeatedly pulled over the head rather than unbuttoned, or hung by the shoulders while wet.
Pilling. Short fibres working loose and tangling — more common with shorter-staple cotton and some synthetic blends. Washing inside out and avoiding high heat reduces it.
Colour faded quickly. Overly hot washing, or a dye with poor fastness. Dark garments fade fastest.
Seams split. Insufficient stitch density, or a stretch garment sewn with a non-stretch stitch.
Jeans blew out at the thigh. Normal wear pattern at the highest-abrasion point, accelerated by stretch denim and tight fits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do sizes vary so much between brands? There’s no enforced standard. Each brand builds patterns on its own fit block, targeting its own customer, and vanity sizing adds further drift. Always check the measurement chart rather than trusting the letter or number.
Is 100% cotton always better than a blend? No — it depends on the purpose. Cotton is more breathable and comfortable, but wrinkles, shrinks, and dries slowly. A cotton-poly blend holds shape better, shrinks less, and lasts longer through washing. For a workout shirt, polyester genuinely outperforms cotton. For a summer shirt, cotton wins.
What GSM should a good T-shirt be? Roughly 180–220 for an everyday tee. Below 150 tends toward semi-sheer; above 250 is heavyweight. But GSM alone doesn’t determine quality — yarn type (combed ring-spun vs carded open-end) matters at least as much.
How do I stop my clothes shrinking? Wash cool, avoid the tumble dryer, and look for pre-shrunk or compacted fabric. Most shrinkage in cotton happens on the first wash, driven mainly by heat. Line drying essentially stops the problem.
What does selvedge denim actually mean? Denim woven on narrow traditional shuttle looms, producing a tightly finished edge rather than a raw cut one. It usually indicates more traditional production and often better fabric, but the edge itself is aesthetic — plenty of excellent denim isn’t selvedge.
Why do my clothes pill? Short fibres work loose under friction and tangle into balls. Shorter-staple cotton and certain synthetic blends pill more. Washing inside out, using lower agitation, and avoiding high heat all reduce it. A fabric shaver removes existing pills safely.
How long should clothes actually last? With reasonable care, a good T-shirt should hold up for a few years of regular wear, jeans for several, and outerwear for many. Underwear and anything with high elastane content has a genuinely shorter life because elastane degrades — that’s material chemistry, not poor quality.
