On this page

The best rust paint for metal is a “direct-to-rust” or rust-inhibiting enamel (such as Rust-Oleum Stops Rust or Hammerite Direct to Rust) used after removing loose rust. If the rust is heavy, treat it first with a rust converter that turns rust into a stable black layer, then paint over it. Paint alone over flaking rust always fails.

Rust products compared

Product What it does Use when
Rust converter Chemically converts rust to a stable primer layer Lots of tight rust you can’t fully remove
Rust-inhibiting primer Blocks moisture and slows new rust Bare or lightly rusty metal
Direct-to-rust enamel Primer and topcoat in one over tight rust Gates, railings, tools, garden furniture
Hammered / textured metal paint Hides imperfections, rust-resistant Old, pitted metal
Cold galvanising spray Zinc-rich protection Welds, galvanised repairs

How to paint rusty metal

  1. Wire brush or sand off loose and flaking rust.
  2. Wipe clean and degrease; let dry.
  3. Apply rust converter to remaining rust (if heavy) and let it turn black.
  4. Prime with rust-inhibiting primer (unless your paint is direct-to-rust).
  5. Apply 2 thin coats of enamel, allowing drying time between coats.

Frequently asked questions

Can you paint directly over rust?

Only over tight surface rust with a direct-to-rust paint. Remove loose rust first.

Is rust converter better than primer?

For heavy rust, yes – it stabilises the rust. For clean metal, a rust-inhibiting primer is enough.

How long does rust paint last outdoors?

With good prep, several years before touch-ups are needed.
