Dying Process of Wool Fabric: Techniques and Tips (2024 Edition)

Wool fabric is a versatile textile that can be dyed in a variety of colors with acid dyes. The dyeing process is simple, but it requires careful attention to the fabric’s condition before and after dyeing to get the best results.

Wool is an animal textile fiber. It comes from sheep and other animals including cashmere and mohair from goats, qiviut from muskoxen, hide and fur clothing from bison, angora from rabbits, and some wools from chemicals. It consists of full protein but a small number of lipids. The dyeing process of wool is nothing but an acid dyeing process.

Short Description of Acid Dyes:

Acid dyes are water-soluble dyes. It is anionic in nature. It is applied in an acidic medium. Here ionic bond is created between the fiber and dye molecule. Light fastness is quite good. Wash fastness is poor.

Step-by-step Dyeing Process of Wool of Knit Fabric:

Fabric load

Detergent hot 80⁰C

Drain and wash

Wool dyeing

Control PH 4.5-5.50

 Dyes 3% (Depends on shade)

Temperature 40⁰C color dosing 10 minute

98⁰C (Grade=1⁰C/min) Runtime=30 minute

Shade check

Soaping  agent  80⁰C *15 minute

Shade check

Fixing  agent for nylon pH  5-5.5

Dyeing of Animal Fibers (Wool and Silk) with Various Classes of Dyes:

To get different colors and shades when dying animal fibers like wool and silk, different classes of dyes are used. Acid dyes, basic dyes, direct dyes, disperse dyes, reactive dyes, and vat dyes are the different types of these dyes. Each type of dye has its own properties and needs to be used differently. Mordants are also used in the dyeing process to make colors last longer and help the fabric take up the dye better.

Conclusion for Dyeing Process of Wool:

In conclusion, wool fabric dyeing is a process that must be done with care and precision. By following the proper steps, you can create a beautiful and long-lasting piece of fabric.

The dyeing process of wool is very simple. But it has some precaution

  • Should not use higher alkali during scouring
  • Enzyme Can destroy the fabric so it should avoid this
