Dyeing clothes at home is genuinely straightforward, and most failures come from three avoidable mistakes: not pre-washing, using a container that’s too small, and skipping the fixative.

Fix those three and the results improve immediately — no special equipment required.

Before You Start: What Can You Dye?

Dyes well: cotton, linen, rayon, viscose, ramie, silk, wool, nylon.

Dyes poorly or not at all: 100% polyester, acrylic, acetate, leather, suede, anything labelled “dry clean only,” and fabrics with special finishes (water-repellent, stain-resistant).

Blends take colour proportionally. A 50/50 poly-cotton shirt dyes to roughly half the intensity of pure cotton, because only the cotton takes colour. That’s why blends come out looking washed-out rather than a clean pale shade.

Check the care label first. If it’s gone, a burn test works: cotton and linen burn steadily and smell like paper, wool and silk smell like burning hair and self-extinguish, synthetics melt into a hard bead.

What You Need

For the bucket method:

  • All-purpose dye (liquid or powder) — Rit and Dylon are the common household brands
  • A 5-gallon bucket (two is better — one for dyeing, one for rinsing)
  • Boiling water
  • 1 cup of salt for cotton, linen, rayon, ramie
  • 1 cup of white vinegar for silk, wool, nylon
  • 1 teaspoon of mild dish soap (helps even distribution)
  • A long stirring stick or spoon
  • Rubber gloves
  • Old towels and something to protect surfaces

Optional but worth it: a dye fixative (sold alongside the dye), used after dyeing to substantially improve wash-fastness.

The Bucket Method

This gives the most control and the most even results.

1. Pre-wash

Wash the garment first, in hot water, with detergent — no fabric softener, which coats fibres and blocks dye absorption. Treat any stains now; dye won’t hide them, it tends to highlight them.

This step is called scouring, and it removes oils, sizing and manufacturing residues. Skipping it is the single most common cause of patchy results.

Leave the fabric wet. Don’t put it through the dryer. Dry fabric absorbs dye unevenly — if it has dried out, soak it in clean water first and wring to damp.

2. Weigh the fabric dry

Dye quantities are calculated from dry fabric weight, not guesswork. As a rough guide, one standard bottle or packet of all-purpose dye handles roughly 1 lb (about 450g) of fabric at a medium shade. For a darker result, double the dye rather than extending the time.

3. Mix the dye bath

Use a container big enough that the fabric can move freely. Crowding is the second most common cause of patchy colour — fabric that can’t circulate dyes unevenly, and there’s no fixing it afterwards.

Fill with hot water — around 3 gallons per pound of fabric. Hotter is better for most dyes; all-purpose dye needs at least 60°C (140°F) to dissolve and bond properly.

Dissolve powder dye fully in 2 cups of very hot water before adding it to the bucket, or shake liquid dye well. Undissolved dye particles cause spots.

Add the salt (or vinegar) and the dish soap, and stir thoroughly.

4. Add the fabric

Wring the wet fabric so it’s damp but not dripping. Lower it in, unfolded, and push it fully under the surface with the stick.

5. Stir — properly

This is the part people underestimate. Stir continuously for the first 10 minutes, then every few minutes for the rest of the time. Constant movement is what produces even colour.

Soak for 30–60 minutes. Longer gives deeper colour, but there’s a point of diminishing returns — after about an hour, most of the dye that’s going to bond has bonded.

Colour looks darker wet than it will dry. Expect it to lighten noticeably.

6. Rinse

Rinse in warm water first, gradually cooling, until the water runs clear. This takes longer than expected — keep going. Unrinsed dye bleeds in the first wash and crocks onto other surfaces.

7. Apply fixative (recommended)

If you have a dye fixative, this is where it goes. Typically: fresh hot water, add the fixative, stir the garment through it for around 20 minutes, then rinse.

This step makes a real difference to how well the colour survives washing, and it’s the step most people skip.

8. Wash separately

Run the garment through the washing machine alone, in warm water with a small amount of detergent. Then dry as normal.

Wash it separately for the first several washes afterwards too.

The Washing Machine Method

Better for large items — curtains, bedding, several garments at once — where a bucket is impractical. Less control, but far less effort.

Top-loading machines:

  1. Set the hottest water setting the fabric can take, the largest load size, and the longest cycle (at least 60 minutes).
  2. Add the damp, unfolded fabric — no more than 1–2 lbs per load.
  3. Dissolve the dye in 2 cups of very hot water and add as the machine fills.
  4. Add 1 cup of salt (or vinegar for silk/wool/nylon) dissolved in hot water.
  5. Let it run. Pause halfway to redistribute bulky items if you can.
  6. Rinse cold until clear, then apply fixative if using.

Front-loading machines:

  1. Wet the fabric in a sink first — front-loaders use less water and won’t soak it properly.
  2. Hottest setting, longest cycle.
  3. Dissolve dye in hot water and pour into the detergent drawer, then flush with more hot water.
  4. No detergent. Add salt or vinegar directly to the drum.

Afterwards, always run an empty hot cycle with detergent (or a cup of bleach) to clear residual dye from the machine. Skipping this stains the next load.

Remove any liquid detergent cups first — they clog with dye.

Tie-Dye and Resist Techniques

Tie-dye works by binding sections of fabric so dye can’t reach them. Rubber bands, string, or clamps all work. Fibre reactive dyes like Procion MX are preferred over all-purpose dye here, because they work cold and give much brighter, more permanent results.

Shibori is the Japanese tradition of the same principle, using folding, binding, stitching and pole-wrapping for more controlled patterns.

Batik uses wax as the resist. Wax is applied where colour should be blocked, the fabric is dyed cold (heat would melt the wax), and the wax is removed afterwards.

Dip dyeing and ombré involve suspending fabric so only part of it enters the bath, and raising it gradually to create a gradient.

Removing Colour First

Dye adds colour; it doesn’t replace it. Dyeing a red shirt blue gives you purple.

Colour remover (sold alongside dyes) strips existing dye and gives a neutral base. It works on most dyed cotton but won’t lift every dye, and it can weaken fabric. Test on a hidden area.

To go lighter than the current colour, you must strip first. To go darker, you can usually dye straight over — dyeing a pale garment navy or black works well without stripping.

Common Problems

Colour came out patchy. Vessel too small, insufficient stirring, or fabric not pre-washed. All three are preventable and none are fixable after the fact — re-dyeing sometimes evens it out.

Much paler than expected. Not enough dye for the fabric weight, or a blend where only part of the fibre took colour. Weigh fabric dry and calculate properly.

Colour bleeds every wash. Fixative skipped, or rinsing was insufficient. If it persists past several washes, the dye never properly bonded.

Came out grey instead of black. Black needs substantially more dye than other colours — often double or triple. Under-dosing black is the most common home dyeing disappointment.

Stains still visible. Dye doesn’t cover stains; it usually makes them more obvious because treated areas absorb differently.

Machine stained after dyeing. Run an empty hot cycle with detergent or bleach immediately.

White stitching stayed white. Very common. Garment thread is often polyester even on cotton garments, and polyester won’t take household dye. This is unavoidable with all-purpose dyes.

Safety and Practicalities

  • Wear gloves — dye stains skin for days
  • Work in a ventilated space, especially with powder dye, which becomes airborne
  • Protect surfaces; dye stains grout, worktops and unsealed wood permanently
  • Don’t use food containers or utensils you’ll cook with again
  • Keep dye away from children and pets

Can I dye polyester at home? Not effectively. Polyester needs disperse dyes at around 130°C under pressure, which domestic equipment can’t reach. Products sold for synthetics work by prolonged simmering and give pale results. On a poly-cotton blend, only the cotton takes colour.

How much dye do I need? Roughly one bottle or packet per pound (450g) of dry fabric for a medium shade. Double it for dark shades, and expect to use even more for black. Always weigh the fabric dry before mixing.

Can I dye clothes in the washing machine? Yes, and it’s the easier option for large items. Use the hottest setting and longest cycle, don’t overload, and run an empty hot cycle with detergent afterwards to clear residual dye from the drum.

Why is my dyed fabric still bleeding after several washes? Either the fixative step was skipped, or the rinse was incomplete, or the dye class was wrong for the fibre. All-purpose dyes bleed more than fibre-reactive dyes even when used correctly — a fixative treatment makes a substantial difference.

Can I dye over an existing colour? You can dye darker but not lighter. Dye adds to what’s there, so blue over red gives purple. To lighten or change direction significantly, use a colour remover first — though it won’t strip every dye and can weaken fabric.

Why didn’t the stitching change colour? The thread is almost certainly polyester, which household dyes don’t colour. This is extremely common even on 100% cotton garments, and there’s no home fix — it’s a characteristic of the garment rather than a dyeing mistake.
