The decision that matters most when buying an embroidery machine isn’t the brand. It’s whether you buy single-needle or multi-needle — and that choice is driven almost entirely by whether you’re embroidering for yourself or for customers.
A single-needle machine stops and waits for you to change thread at every colour. On a hobby project that’s a mild inconvenience. On an order of fifty caps with a six-colour logo, it’s the difference between a viable business and an unviable one.

Single-Needle vs Multi-Needle
Single-Needle Machines
One needle, one thread at a time. When the design reaches a colour change, the machine stops and you rethread manually.
They’re the entry point for home embroidery — considerably cheaper, physically smaller, and many models double as regular sewing machines, which is genuinely useful if you’re short on space or budget.
The constraint is time. A six-colour design means six stops, and if you step away from the machine, it sits idle until you come back. For personal projects, gifts, and occasional custom work, that’s entirely manageable.
Typical hoop sizes run 4×4 up to 5×7 inches, with some larger models reaching 6×10.
Multi-Needle Machines
Six, ten, twelve, or more needles, each threaded with a different colour. The machine switches between them automatically and runs the design start to finish without intervention.
This is what makes commercial embroidery work. You load the garment, start the design, and go do something else. The time saved on thread changes is the entire business case.
Multi-needle machines also handle caps, which single-needle machines generally can’t. Cap embroidery needs a specialised cylindrical frame and a driver attachment, and it’s a large share of the commercial market.
The tradeoffs are cost (typically starting several thousand and climbing steeply), physical footprint, and a steeper learning curve.
Which Do You Need?
Buy single-needle if: you’re embroidering for yourself, family and friends; your designs are simple; you’re learning; or your budget is under roughly $1,500.
Buy multi-needle if: you’re taking paid orders; you need caps; your designs regularly have four or more colours; or you’re processing enough volume that your time has real cost attached.
The honest advice for most people starting out is to begin single-needle. It teaches you stabiliser selection, hooping, digitising and tension — all of which transfer directly — at a fraction of the financial risk. Plenty of successful embroidery businesses started on a single-needle machine and upgraded once demand justified it.
Specifications That Matter
Hoop size (embroidery field). The maximum design dimensions the machine can stitch in one hooping. This is a hard limit set by the machine, not just the hoop.
- 4×4 inches — monograms, small logos, pocket designs
- 5×7 inches — the most generally useful home size; covers most decorative designs
- 6×10 and larger — jacket backs, quilt blocks, large designs
- 8×14 and above — commercial territory
Larger designs can be split across multiple hoopings, but alignment between sections is fiddly and a common source of ruined projects.
Speed (stitches per minute). Home single-needle machines typically run 400–850 spm. Multi-needle machines run 1,000–1,500 spm. On a 15,000-stitch design, the difference between 600 and 1,200 spm is roughly twenty minutes versus ten.
Speed matters commercially and barely matters for hobby use. Note that maximum speed is rarely usable speed — dense designs and difficult fabrics need slowing down regardless of what the machine can do.
Needle count on multi-needle machines. Six covers most logo work. Ten to twelve gives headroom so you’re rethreading less often between jobs. Fifteen and up is production territory.
File format support. Embroidery designs come in machine-specific formats: PES (Brother, Baby Lock), JEF (Janome), DST (Tajima — the commercial standard), EXP, VP3, HUS, XXX. Most machines accept several, and conversion software handles the rest, but check that the machine reads the formats your design sources supply.
Connectivity. USB is standard. Wireless and app-based design transfer is increasingly common on newer home machines and is genuinely convenient.
Automatic features. Automatic thread trimming between colours, thread break detection, and automatic needle threading all save meaningful time and frustration.
Cap capability. If caps are part of your plan, confirm the machine supports a cap frame and driver — this is a multi-needle feature and not universal even there.
The Home Tier
Brother dominates the entry-level home market. The PE-series (PE800, PE900) are the common recommendations — 5×7 fields, built-in designs, straightforward controls, and on newer models wireless design transfer via app. Brother also manufactures Baby Lock’s machines, which is why the specifications look so similar.
Janome tends toward larger embroidery fields and a stronger sewing feel on combination machines, with steady stitch control. Typically priced above Brother for comparable capability, and the usual choice for someone who wants more room and control rather than the easiest possible start.
Combination machines sew and embroider in one unit. They’re space-efficient and cost-effective, and they suit people who do both occasionally. The compromise is that they’re rarely as good at either job as dedicated machines, and you can’t sew while an embroidery job runs.

The Commercial Tier
Multi-needle machines split roughly into home-business and industrial tiers.
Brother PR-series (PR680W, PR1055X) — 6 and 10 needles respectively, well supported, and the common step-up for someone outgrowing a single-needle machine. Around 1,000 spm.
Janome MB-7 — 7 needles, compact, aimed at serious hobbyists and small businesses. Easier to manage than full commercial systems.
Ricoma (EM-1010, MT-1501, MT-1212) — 10 to 15 needles, aggressively positioned for home-based startups and small shops, with strong marketing toward people entering the business. Competitive speed and embroidery area for the price.
Tajima — the long-established commercial name, and the reason DST is the industry-standard file format. Built for continuous production, priced accordingly.
Barudan — premium commercial machines with a strong reputation for stitch quality and longevity.
Melco (EMT16X) — 16 needles, high speed, modular approach favoured by operations scaling up.
Prices in this tier vary enormously by configuration, dealer and region — from several thousand for entry multi-needle up to $20,000+ for industrial heads. Dealer support and service availability matter far more here than in the home tier, because downtime costs money.
What You Need Beyond the Machine
The machine is roughly half the setup. Budget for the rest.
Stabiliser is not optional and not a place to economise. It supports fabric during the dense, high-speed stitching that embroidery involves. Cut-away for knits, tear-away for stable wovens, wash-away for sheers and as a topper on textured fabrics like towelling. Using tear-away on a knit — a very common beginner error — lets the design distort the moment the backing comes off.
Thread. 40-weight polyester is the standard: strong, colourfast, and survives commercial laundering. Rayon has a softer sheen some prefer for decorative work but is weaker and less bleach-resistant. Cheap thread sheds lint into the tension mechanism and breaks at speed — it costs more in downtime than good thread costs to buy.
Needles. Embroidery needles have a larger eye and a modified groove to reduce friction at high speed. 75/11 is the common default. Change them frequently.
Digitising software. This is the part people underestimate. Embroidery designs aren’t images — they’re stitch instructions specifying stitch type, direction, density, underlay and sequence. Converting artwork into a design is a real skill with its own learning curve, and good software is a significant purchase. Many small operations outsource digitising rather than doing it in-house, at least initially.
Hoops in the sizes you’ll actually use, plus specialist frames for caps or small items if relevant.
Blanks — the garments and items you’ll embroider. If you’re selling, this is an ongoing inventory cost.

Getting Good Results
Match the stabiliser to the fabric. This single decision causes more ruined projects than anything else. Stretch fabric needs cut-away, permanently. Stable woven needs tear-away. Textured fabric needs a wash-away topper so stitches don’t sink into the pile.
Hoop correctly. Fabric should be taut and flat — “drum-tight” — but not stretched. Stretched fabric relaxes after unhooping and the design puckers as it does.
Float what you can’t hoop. Thick collars, structured caps, and leather shouldn’t be forced into a hoop. Hoop the stabiliser instead and attach the item to it.
Test on scrap first, using the same fabric and the same stabiliser as the final piece. Not a similar fabric — the same one.
Slow down for dense designs and difficult fabrics. Maximum speed is not always usable speed.
Watch the first colour run. Most problems become visible in the first minute, and stopping early saves the garment.
Common Problems
Puckering around the design. Wrong stabiliser, insufficient stabiliser, or fabric stretched during hooping. Almost never the machine.
Design distorts or shifts mid-stitch. Fabric moved in the hoop, or hooping tension was too loose.
Thread breaking repeatedly. Poor-quality thread, blunt or wrong needle, incorrect threading path, tension too tight, or running too fast for the design density.
Looping on the underside. Upper tension too loose, or the machine isn’t threaded through the tension mechanism correctly.
Stitches sinking into the fabric. Textured fabric without a wash-away topper. Common on towelling and fleece.
Hoop marks left on the fabric. Over-tight hooping. Some marks steam out; some don’t.
Registration off between colours. Usually fabric shift, sometimes a digitising problem in the design file itself.
