Requirement Of Knitting for beginners step by step

Now, let us talk about the supplies. Most of us don’t know what supplies are actually important for knitting. But what confuses us more is the available options inside. Don’t worry, I got your back. The below traits can help you what supplies are essential and what type they should be off.

Yarn

There is no doubt that yarn is the most significant thing for knitting. A chunky yarn can be great for your knitting work and works absolutely fine against thick needles. The best part about this yarn is, it can hold its grip firmly. On the other hand, thinner yarns are not so convenient to use and rather hard to control.

Buying Tips for Starters:

While buying needles and yarn, choose a low-priced acrylic yarn. Thus, you will not feel the mistake of breaking your bank as a big deal. Since you are a newbie, you will definitely make some mistakes and that’s normal. Don’t panic, mistakes will appear in your journey. But to feel less hurt, you must use cheap yarn instead of expensive artisan yarn.

Needles

If you are just a beginner in knitting and entered a shop to buy needles, you must give your eyes first to the wood and bamboo ones. These types of needles have a drag of natural surface that helps to grip yarn. Consequently, you will find it less slippery compared to aluminum and steel needles. And if you want, you can also go for plastic needles. They are okay too. But try to have your first choice of wood or bamboo needles. They are the most effective as per the experiences of knitters.

Size

Now, let us discuss the size of the needles. You shall decide the size of your needle according to the size of your yarn. There are many balls of yarn that include recommendations of the consumers’ needle size which are listed in millimeters.

Step-by-step knitting

There are three important skills in knitting. They are- cast on, knit, and cast off. Unless you don’t adapt to these three steps, it will not be possible to make your knitting process successful. Or you can say they are the backbone of the knitting system. Once you master the techniques, no one can stop you to be a professional knitter soon.

But this is not where it ends. Other than cast on, knit, and cast off, you will also require some other simple steps like tying a slip knot, purling, and so on. Just consider them as your secondary steps, but don’t forget about the primary ones.

Tie slip knot

First, you have to make a slip knot. Now the question is, how to do that. Take your yarn and loop it into a pretzel shape. Make sure you leave a tail at the end for at least three times more than your width of knitting. For example, you got a scarf 8 inches in width and you will require a 24 inches long tail for that. For this reason, you will have to slip your knitting needle by the pretzel shape. Then pull the yarn from the end so that it gets tightened firmly.

You can also call slip knots a slip noose. If you yet want a simpler technique to tie your slip knot then the below points can help you to determine quickly.

  • Double the line back and make a loop there.
  • Lay above the doubled lines by running the tag at the end back to the loop.
  • Make more than one turns with the help of tag ends which is around the doubled lines and through a recent loop created.

Cast on

Now, it’s time to start knitting primarily. Make a foundation row of stitches by casting on your needle. Then use the tail of your yarn and drape it over your left thumb. You will also need to drape the working yarn to cover your left index finger. To catch the yarn ends, you can use the rest of the fingers and keep them in your left palm. After you make a loop on your thumb, insert the needle by taking it upwards.

Do you still have a working yarn on your index finger? Good. Using your needle, you have to catch that and with the loop on your thumb, you are to pull the yarn.

No need to keep your thumb on the loop, just take it out. You can secure the yarn ends by keeping them on your palm and repositioning your thumb. Then tighten up that new stitch with the needle in your right hand. You can continue the steps until your cast does not match your required number of stitches.

Knit stitch

Hold your needle in your left hand where you have cast on stitches. Then use your left index finger to wrap the working yarn over it. You will see an insert point in your right needle. Open your stitch through with that after you go back to the cast-on stitch.

Now, use your right needle to catch the working yarn and pull it where there is an open stitch. Slip off the cast-on stitch in your left needle. Be alert that you are holding the middle finger to control your second cast-on stitch. As a result, it will be hard to slip off. Afterward, you will see a newly formed knit stitch in your right needle. Keep doing the knitting around your cast-on row.

Hopefully, you are done completing a row. Now, vacant the last stitch from your left needle by exchanging the needles. Then return the needle to your left hand after stitching.

How to purl

A purl stitch comes from a knit stitch in two different ways. Here, you will need to place your working yarn in front of your project, rather than putting it on the back. Then insert the needle frontwards from the back. Remember, not to insert the needle from the front towards the back.

Now, take your cast-on stitches and hold the needle in your left hand. Wrap the ball end within your left index finger and keep holding it in front of your work. Then insert your right needle’s point to the front from its back. Make sure, your needle goes through the first cast-on stitch and opens up finally.

After you complete your initial purl, lay the yarn above your needle. Try to keep it in the back decreasing from the front. A nice way to lay the yarn is, by moving your left index finger in a downward position. Now, push the yarn so that it comes back through your cast-on stitch

Now, you are to slip off the cast-on stitch on your left needle. And, don’t forget to hold your middle finger as well before the second cast-on stitch. It ensures that you are not going to slip off in your work. Here, you will get a newly formed stitch which is called, purl stitch. This purl stitch will be facing you and look like a grain of rice and its reverse side will form a shape like V.

Cast off

Most of the time our stitches unravel after removing from the needle. But don’t worry. If you follow the cast-off step, that problem will budge away for sure. In this step, you will have to knit two stitches. For the first stitch, insert your left needle and lift that stitch up so that it comes over the second stitch. And make sure your needle is there as well.

Repeat that stitch in the same manner which you did in your first stitch of cast-off. Then cut your working yarn very carefully. But before that, leave a 6-inch long tail from every side. Again, pull that tail with the help of your last stitch and make the knit completely secured.

Now, it’s time to weave your tail ends. All you need is to use a needle for your yarn. You can also take the help of the backs located in several stitches. But you will have to pick up only one surface of those loops.
