Most sewing machine problems clear up in under five minutes, and most of them have the same fix: rethread the machine with the presser foot raised.
That sounds too simple to be the answer, but the mechanism explains it. The tension discs only open when the presser foot is up. Thread the machine with the foot down and the thread rides over the closed discs instead of sitting between them — so it never engages the tension system at all. Every stitch after that is wrong.

Threading Correctly
Always thread with the presser foot UP. This is the single most important habit in machine sewing.
Follow your manual’s exact path. Missing the tension disc or the take-up lever guarantees tension problems. Machines differ, and the diagram printed on the machine body is usually abbreviated.
Secure the spool. A loose or tilted spool feeds thread unevenly. Use the spool cap that matches your spool’s diameter.
Don’t skip thread guides. Each one controls the thread path; skipping any creates uneven feed.
Test the tension engagement. With the foot down, tug the thread gently — you should feel resistance. If it pulls freely, it isn’t in the tension discs.
Winding the Bobbin
Thread should lie flat and even across the bobbin. Uneven winding produces tension faults that look like machine faults.
Don’t wind new thread over old on a partially full bobbin, and check the bobbin sits in its case turning the correct direction — this varies by machine and is easy to get backwards.
Understanding Tension
Correct tension means the top and bobbin threads interlock in the middle of the fabric layers. Stitches look even on both sides, with no visible loops on either face and no puckering.

Fixing It, In Order
Work through these before touching any dial:
- Rethread completely, presser foot up. This resolves the majority of cases.
- Change the needle. Blunt or wrong-type needles cause tension-like symptoms.
- Check the bobbin — correct type for your machine, wound evenly, inserted the right way, threaded through its own tension spring.
- Clean the bobbin race and tension discs. Compacted lint changes tension mechanically.
- Check the thread — good quality, not degraded with age, same type top and bobbin.
- Only now, adjust the upper tension dial.
Adjusting the Dial
Move in half-steps. Going from 4 to 8 in one jump makes it impossible to find the right setting.
Change one variable at a time. Adjusting stitch length simultaneously makes results uninterpretable.
Test on the actual fabric, not a different scrap. Tension correct for quilting cotton won’t be correct for jersey.
Bobbin tension is a last resort. Photograph the screw position first, then turn no more than a quarter turn at a time. Most tension problems never require touching it.
Reset to default when things get confusing. Most machines mark the standard setting (often 4).
Presser Foot Pressure
Often overlooked, and it causes problems that look like tension faults. Too much pressure produces puckering, dragging and wavy seams. Too little causes poor feeding and skipped stitches.
Reduce pressure for knits and lightweight fabrics; increase it for heavy wovens.
Core Techniques
Seams and Seam Finishes
Backstitch at the start and end of every seam to lock it, or use the machine’s lock-stitch function.
Seam allowance consistency matters more than the exact width. Use the markings on the needle plate, or a quarter-inch foot for quilting.
Press seams as you go. This is genuinely half of sewing well. Pressing after each seam produces dramatically better results than pressing at the end.
Finishing raw edges stops fraying: zigzag or overcast stitch, pinking shears, French seams for lightweight fabric, or an overlocker.
Sewing Knits
Knits need different settings from wovens:
- Ballpoint or stretch needle — pushes between loops instead of cutting them
- Stretch stitch or narrow zigzag — a straight stitch has no give and will pop when the fabric stretches
- Reduce presser foot pressure to prevent wavy seams
- Walking foot helps with slippery or curling knit fabric
- Don’t stretch the fabric while sewing — let the feed dogs do the work
Hems
Double-fold hem — fold twice to enclose the raw edge. Standard for most garments.
Blind hem — nearly invisible from the outside, using a blind hem foot and the machine’s blind hem stitch.
Rolled hem — narrow finish for lightweight fabric, much easier with a rolled hem foot.
Twin needle hem — two parallel rows on the face with a zigzag underneath, giving some stretch. The standard home approximation of a coverstitch hem on knits.
Zips
Standard zip — use a zipper foot so you can stitch close to the teeth. Baste the seam closed first for accurate placement.
Invisible zip — needs an invisible zipper foot with grooves that guide the coil.
Always press the zip tape flat before sewing, and move the slider out of the way rather than stitching around it.
Buttonholes
One-step buttonholes are made in a single automated pass and come out consistent.
Four-step buttonholes require turning a dial through each stage; consistency depends on you.
Always test on a scrap with the same layers and interfacing as the garment. Cut the buttonhole open with a seam ripper, placing a pin at each end so you don’t overshoot.
Interfacing
Interfacing adds structure to collars, cuffs, waistbands and buttonholes.
Fusible irons on; sew-in is stitched in place. Match the weight to the fabric — heavy interfacing on light fabric produces a stiff, unnatural result.
Always test fusible interfacing on a scrap first. Some fabrics show the adhesive through.
Working With Difficult Fabrics
Slippery fabrics (satin, chiffon, jersey) — use a walking foot, sharp fine needles, tissue paper underneath, and plenty of pins or clips.
Heavy fabrics (denim, canvas) — heavier needle, longer stitch length, walking foot, and a hump jumper or folded card to level the foot over thick seams.
Sticky fabrics (vinyl, leather, oilcloth) — Teflon or roller foot. Never pin within the finished area, since pin holes are permanent. Use clips.
Sheer fabrics — French seams, fine needles, and reduced presser foot pressure.

Systematic Troubleshooting
When something goes wrong, work through in this order rather than guessing.
Thread bunching underneath. Upper threading, almost always. Rethread with the foot up.
Skipped stitches. Blunt needle, wrong needle type for the fabric, or needle inserted incorrectly. Replace the needle first.
Thread breaking. Incorrect threading, blunt needle, tension too tight, poor or old thread, or a burr on the needle plate.
Fabric not feeding. Feed dogs lowered, presser foot up, stitch length at zero, or pressure too low.
Needle breaking. Pulling the fabric, needle too fine for the fabric, or hitting pins.
Machine jamming. Stop immediately. Usually thread caught in the bobbin race. Remove the needle plate and clear it.
Wavy or stretched seams on knits. Presser foot pressure too high, or fabric being pulled through.
Puckered seams. Tension too tight, stitch length too short, or fabric not supported.
Uneven stitch length. Feeding problem, inconsistent speed, or the fabric being pulled.

- Test on scrap of the actual fabric before every project
- Change needles every eight hours of sewing
- Clean lint from the bobbin area every few projects
