Most people buy the wrong first sewing machine for the same reason: they compare stitch counts. A machine offering 200 stitches looks like better value than one offering 20, so that’s the one that ends up in the basket.
In practice, almost all sewing uses four stitches — straight, zigzag, a stretch stitch, and a buttonhole. What actually determines whether a machine serves you well is build quality, motor strength, and whether it suits the fabrics you’ll be working with.

Start Here: What Will You Actually Sew?
This single question resolves most of the decision.
Garment sewing (clothes, dresses, shirts) — you need good stitch variety, a reliable buttonhole, and the ability to handle knits. A mid-range computerised machine is usually the best fit.
Heavy fabrics (denim, canvas, upholstery, leather) — you need a strong motor and a metal internal frame far more than you need stitch options. A heavy-duty mechanical machine is the right call.
Quilting — throat space becomes the priority, since you have to physically fit rolled fabric through the gap beside the needle. A walking foot is close to essential.
Occasional repairs and hemming — a simple, reliable mechanical machine will do everything you need for years.
Knits and activewear — you’ll want a machine with good stretch stitches, and eventually an overlocker to go alongside it.
Buying for the sewing you imagine doing rather than the sewing you’ll actually do is the most common and most expensive mistake.
Mechanical vs Computerised
Mechanical machines use dials and levers. No screen, no processor. Typically 10–30 stitches.
They’re simpler, cheaper to repair, and generally last longer — fewer electronics means fewer failure points. Any competent repair shop can service one. For straightforward sewing, a good mechanical machine is often a better buy than a cheap computerised one at the same price.
Computerised machines add a processor and screen. The real benefit isn’t the larger stitch library — it’s precision and convenience: automatic needle threading, needle up/down positioning, speed limiting, automatic thread cutting, and one-step buttonholes that come out identical every time.
If you’re switching settings constantly, or you make a lot of buttonholes, the convenience is genuine. The tradeoff is repair complexity and a shorter expected service life.
Neither type is universally better. Mechanical for durability and simplicity; computerised for convenience and precision.
Specifications That Matter
Internal frame material. The most important specification, and the one least often advertised. A metal frame holds the needle bar and hook in alignment under load. Plastic frames flex, and flex causes skipped stitches and timing drift over time. This is the single biggest predictor of how long a machine lasts.
Motor strength. The meaningful test is whether the machine can start from stationary through several layers of denim without you helping it along with the handwheel. Underpowered machines stall, and stalling damages the motor.
Presser foot pressure adjustment. Lower pressure for knits, higher for heavy wovens. This solves a whole class of feeding problems, and cheaper machines often omit it.
Feed system. Standard feed dogs pull fabric from below only. A walking foot or built-in dual feed also pulls from above, which stops layers shifting — necessary for quilting, matched plaids, and slippery fabrics.
Throat space. The gap between needle and machine body. Around 6–7 inches is standard. For quilting, more is substantially better.
Buttonhole type. One-step buttonholes are made in a single automated pass and come out consistent. Four-step buttonholes require manually turning a dial through each stage, and consistency depends on you.
Bobbin type. Drop-in (top-loading) bobbins are easier to insert and let you see the thread remaining. Front-loading bobbin cases are often found on more robust machines and some sewists prefer them for tension control.
Feed dog drop. Needed for free-motion work and darning. Absent on some entry machines.
Needle position adjustment. Being able to move the needle left and right is more useful than it sounds — it makes topstitching and zip insertion considerably easier.
What to Expect at Each Budget
Prices move constantly and vary by region and retailer, so treat these as rough bands rather than fixed figures.
Under $150 — Entry mechanical machines. Fine for occasional repairs, hems, and learning the basics. Expect a plastic frame and a modest motor. Not suited to heavy fabric or regular use.
$150–$300 — The realistic starting point for someone who intends to sew regularly. This band includes both capable mechanical workhorses and entry computerised machines. Most people’s first serious machine sits here.
$300–$600 — Better build quality, stronger motors, and more genuinely useful features rather than more stitches. Heavy-duty models and better computerised machines. A machine bought here can last decades.
$600–$1,500 — Dealer-quality machines. Noticeably better stitch quality, quieter operation, and features that matter for serious garment work or quilting.
$1,500+ — Premium and specialist machines: large-throat quilting machines, high-end computerised models, and semi-industrial units.
A general rule: $200–$400 is the sweet spot for a first machine. Enough to get something that works with you rather than against you, without paying for capability you can’t yet use.
The Main Brands
Brother — the widest features for the money, and consistently the most beginner-friendly. Good automation, easy threading, generous accessories included. Build quality is adequate rather than exceptional on entry models. The most commonly recommended brand for first-time buyers.
Janome — generally the best build quality per pound spent. Metal frames, reliable mechanisms, and machines that genuinely last decades. Fewer decorative features at the same price, which is a fair trade for most people.
Singer — the most recognised name, with a mixed modern reputation. The Heavy Duty line is well regarded for thick fabrics and strong motors. Their budget lines have drawn more criticism in recent years, and several dealers no longer recommend them.
Juki — comes from an industrial background, and it shows in stitch quality and speed. Excellent machines, typically at higher prices, aimed at sewists who are past the beginner stage.
Bernina and Bernette — Swiss engineering, precise stitch formation, premium pricing. Bernette is the more accessible sub-brand.
Baby Lock — strong reputation particularly for overlockers, sold through dealers rather than general retail.
Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff — established European brands with good dealer networks and distinctive features (Pfaff’s integrated dual feed being the notable one).

Brother CS7000X — the most widely recommended beginner computerised machine. Around 70 stitches, drop-in bobbin, easy setup, and a good accessory bundle including a walking foot. The usual default recommendation for a first machine.
Brother XM2701 — a cheaper entry point with the core features and 27 stitches. A reasonable choice on a tight budget.
Singer Heavy Duty 4423 / 4432 — metal internal frame, strong motor, around 23–32 stitches. Built for denim, canvas, and multiple layers rather than decorative work. The most common recommendation for heavy fabric on a budget.
Janome HD3000 — heavy-duty mechanical with a metal frame and industrial-style feed. Fewer stitches (around 18), but the ones heavy-fabric sewists actually use. Widely regarded as a decades-long machine.
Janome 2212 — a simple 12-stitch mechanical machine with dial controls and a strong reliability reputation. The pick for someone who wants one machine for a very long time and doesn’t care about decorative stitches.

Setting Up and First Use
Wind the bobbin properly. Uneven winding causes tension problems that look like machine faults. The thread should lie flat and even across the bobbin.
Thread with the presser foot UP. This is the single most important habit to build. The tension discs only open when the foot is raised — threading with it down leaves the thread sitting outside the tension mechanism entirely, which produces a tangled mess underneath the fabric.
Match the needle to the fabric. Universal for general use, ballpoint for knits, sharp for tightly woven fabric, denim needles for heavy wovens. The wrong needle causes skipped stitches and damaged fabric.
Test on a scrap of the actual fabric before starting. Tension that’s correct for cotton won’t be correct for jersey.
Start slow. Foot pedal control takes practice, and most beginners’ wobbly seams are a speed problem rather than a machine problem.

Troubleshooting
Nearly every “broken machine” is one of a handful of issues. Work through them in this order.
Thread bunching underneath the fabric. Almost always an upper threading problem, despite appearing to be a bobbin fault. Rethread completely with the presser foot up.
Skipped stitches. Blunt needle, wrong needle type for the fabric, or a needle inserted incorrectly. Replace the needle first — it fixes this most of the time.
Thread keeps breaking. In order of likelihood: incorrect threading, blunt needle, upper tension too tight, poor-quality or old thread. Thread degrades with age, and decades-old thread from an inherited box will snap readily.
Fabric not feeding. Feed dogs lowered, presser foot not down, or stitch length set to zero.
Uneven or loopy stitches. Tension issue — but rethread and check the needle before touching the tension dial. Adjusting tension first turns one problem into two.
Machine jamming or grinding. Stop immediately. Usually thread caught in the bobbin race. Remove the needle plate and bobbin case, and clear it out.
Needle breaking. Pulling the fabric while sewing, wrong needle size for the fabric, or hitting a pin. Let the feed dogs move the fabric rather than pulling it.
Maintenance
Machines fail from neglect far more often than from wear.
Clean lint every few projects. Remove the needle plate and bobbin case, and brush out the accumulation. Lint is the leading cause of tension problems and mysterious jams.
Never use compressed air. It drives lint deeper into the mechanism instead of removing it.
Oil only where the manual specifies. Many modern machines have sealed bearings and need no oiling; oiling those does harm. Where oiling is specified, use proper sewing machine oil, never general household oil.
Change needles every eight hours or so of sewing, and immediately after hitting a pin.
Cover the machine when not in use.
Service annually if you sew regularly. A professional service resets timing and tension in ways home maintenance can’t.

Why does my thread keep bunching underneath? It looks like a bobbin problem but it’s nearly always upper threading. Raise the presser foot and rethread the machine completely — with the foot down, the tension discs stay closed and the thread never engages them.
Do I need an overlocker as well? Not initially. A zigzag or overcast stitch finishes seams adequately. An overlocker becomes worthwhile when you sew knits regularly or want commercially finished seams. It supplements a sewing machine rather than replacing one.
Is a second-hand machine a good idea? Often an excellent idea, particularly for older all-metal mechanical machines, which were built to a standard that’s expensive to match today. Test it before buying: sew through several layers, check that it doesn’t stall, and listen for grinding. Budget for a service.
